A Celebration of Culture and Community: Sri Lankan New Year in Arrowtown
On Sunday, 20th April 2025, the Arrowtown Community Centre came alive with colour, music, and the spirit of celebration as the Sri Lankan community gathered to mark the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. It was a beautiful occasion, filled with tradition, pride, and a genuine sense of community.
The ceremony began at 11:30am with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp, a deeply symbolic moment in Sri Lankan culture that signifies the start of a new year with hope, light, and prosperity. I felt truly humbled to represent Lakes Multicultural Collective as a Chief Guest at such a meaningful celebration, and to take part in this ritual alongside other honoured guests and the Sri Lankan Association Queenstown committee. It was indeed a special moment and one that I will cherish.
The day unfolded with an infectious energy, thanks to the incredible efforts of the local Sri Lankan community. Traditional games brought joy and laughter to all ages, and the performances—from dance to music—were vibrant expressions of culture and heritage. These contributions added so much richness to the celebration and highlighted the deep pride the community holds in keeping their traditions alive.
In my short speech, I spoke about how privileged I felt to be part of such a special occasion. What struck me most was the genuine warmth and sense of community that surrounded us throughout the day. It reminded me how, at the heart of it all, we share the same hopes—to feel connected, to celebrate where we come from, and to feel at home, wherever we are.
This event was a powerful reminder of the strength that lies in culture, and the beauty that comes from sharing it. Thank you to the Sri Lankan Association Queenstown and everyone involved for welcoming us with open arms and allowing us to be part of this meaningful celebration.
Suba Aluth Avuruddak Wewa!
Wishing everyone a joyful and prosperous New Year.
